What sets Tacoma Language Academy apart?

We use a natural, innovative, and proven method called CI Immersion™, where the “CI” stands for “Comprehensible Input”. Unlike a traditional immersion, where the stream of language you hear or read can be overwhelming, we aim to make the language you interact with easy to understand. This makes the learning experience much more enjoyable.

Also unlike traditional language class, we focus minimally on grammar. Instead, you will have many, many opportunties to listen to, read, and intereact with easy-to-understand langauge that makes learning natural, engaging, and fun.

What is CI Immersion™?

CI Immersion™ is a classroom-tested system of best practices for teaching and learning new languages. In a CI Immersion™ classroom, the instructor helps facilitate a low-stress and highly-comprehensible environment where learners have ample opportunities to Listen, Read, and Interact with the target language. Put simply, CI Immersion™ puts you in the best position to acquire a new language naturally.

How long does it take to become fluent?

Every learner is different. Some people pick up languages right away, while others take a bit more time. This is the norm and is to be expected. The average Tacoma Language Academy student will reach intermediate-low proficiency after approximately 60-80 hours of instruction.

What langauges does Tacoma Language Academy offer?

At present we offer Spanish classes and lessons. Our aim is to offer more languages in the future.

Can I earn college credit for classes at Tacoma Language Academy?

At this time it is not possible to earn college or high school credits at Tacoma Language Academy. Please read our Accreditation Policy for more details.

By what criteria and timeline are candidates accepted?

Candiates are evaluated based on their interest in language learning, previous experience (if any), and commitment to study for the entire academic calendar year. Applicants will receive a response within 3 business days of submitting their application. Once accepted, they have up to 7 days to confirm their spot. Enrollment is open on a rolling basis until classes reach capacity.

What is the time commitment at Tacoma Language Academy?

Language learning takes time. The more time a learner spends processing the language, the faster they will acquire it. Tacoma Language Academy students in the standard track can expect to attend 2 one-hour classes per week. Students in the intensive track can expect 3 one-hour classes per week.

What is the tuition schedule?

Tuition differs between the standard and intensive tracks. For the standard track, yearly tuition is $2250 (60 classes per year, 30 classes per term). For the intensive track, yearly tuition is $2625 (90 classes per year, 45 classes per term).

What if I'm only interested in private language lessons?

We prioritize our admitted students for private lessons. Please apply for admission even if you decide not to enroll in a langauge course. Just be sure to specify that you're only interested in lessons on the notes portion of the admission application.

What days do classes meet?

Classes meet Monday-Thursday according to the schedule of each class. For example, a standard track class may meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, while an Intensive Track class may meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Fridays will be reserved as make-up days in the event of instructor illness, extreme weather, or emergencies.

Who is elegible to take private lessons?

Accepted students are given priority to schedule additional private lessons. Accepted students will be given a discount on private lessons.

How much do private lessons cost?

Private lessons start at $75 per one-hour lesson. Students who are also enrolled in a standard track or intensive track course are eligible for a discounted lesson rate of $50 per one-hour lesson.

What are the benefits of private lessons?

Private lessons are the best way to get started in a new language. You'll receive an hour of instruction tailored to your specific needs. You'll also get a Personalized Proficiency Plan™ that will help you find resources and a language learning routine that will work for you.

What about additional à la carte classes?

Most of the time, à la carte classes like Café y Cuentos are first made available to accepted students, who will receive a discount. Tuition for à la carte classes is separate from tution for the standard and intesive tracks.

Occassionally, à la carte classes will be offered to the public.

Tacoma Language Academy - Intensive Summer Institute

Starting in July 2025, the Tacoma Language Academy Intensive Summer Institute offers a chance to learn at the beginner and intermediate levels. These opportunities are offered exclusively to accepted students.
